DEAR READERS,
Last night after a long, drag out battle with my self confidence, I decided to go to the Early Dolphin Record Release. The Venue was "echo curio" which is one of the deciding factors on account of it being right by my house and one of my favorite places to see underground music…. Yes even more than the smell!….. much more than the smell. I like the art, the smallness, the way you see the cars passing by outside, or how it is right in echo park and all the strange hot dog selling guys are everywhere outside, or how it is BYOB… and all that stuff.
The first time I went to echo curio was to see the amazing
Tiny Vipers. I had bought her new album just before the show,
and had fallen in love with her last one far before the show.
since I had never been to the echo curio I had no Idea what to
expect. I had to ask like two guys before I believed that it was
actually BYOB. I drank a great big Sapporo and chilled out on
the floor to watch one of the most amazing shows I had ever seen.
Jesse Fortino can really sing, and play that guitar as well. she
seems to bring a voice out of both herself, and her instrument, that can best be described as "the voice of a goddess".
she humbly went through her set, song after song, without saying
a word and by the time the show was over nobody knew exactly
what had just happened in front of them. the show was stellar!
Any way last night I was awoken to a alarm on my phone informing me that I had to see the early dolphin show tonight. I hit up facebook, and other forms of communication to find somebody who would want to enjoy the show with me but nobody ended up committing. so I went alone. Going to a show alone for me has always been kind of an unsettling/educational thing. I mean when I do anything I feel awkward enough but when I am at a show all by myself I just don't fit in. I guess I kind of feel like people are staring at me, saying things to each other like, "who's this asshole with the camera" or "look at this guy taking pictures" or "YOUR TOO CLOSE TO ME DUDE"… actually that last one somebody really said to me last night.. the fregging door guy. which seems like a horse shit statement considering he works in a venue that usually fills beyond capacity… get used to it "DUDE". So anyway I mustered up the courage to go it alone. and I felt awkward just the same. one thing that was incredibliy different was that this was my first time seeing drums played in this venue. I have only seen two other shows here (the first being tiny vipers)-which is solo acoustic, and the second being some weird noise thing that was percussion-less. anyway the sound of cymbals and snare I noticed really stand out in this place, when they were doing the sound check I remember saying to myself, "that guitar is way too loud!" but when they started playing it was totally drowned out in the heavy hissing of the cymbals. they fixed the audio after the first song and the place seemed to be screaming at you from all sides. the place really fills up with sound..
The first band to play was a band called "the spires".. and they were awesome.
They were a trio, two girls(rhythm) and a guy that took good care of the guitars and vocals. the guy sort of reminded me of Bill Callahan in the way he sang and played, which is funny becuause he actually made a reference to Callahan when they were sound checking. think of if you mixed Smog with the Poppiness of Josh Rouse and then realized that you were in a dream. that is the feeling that this band gives off. very punchy rythems, simple yet fitting, with sloshy guitar solos and dancing vocal melody. this band ended up being my favorite of the night.
The Next band on the lineup was the group that I went to see. They were called "early Dolphin". really good band. they remind me of wilco, yet sometimes remind me of BJM. which in my opinion is a pretty strange mix. anyway they really blew me away as well. the singer guy must be a little crazy. they rocked out and then blew away. the whole thing seemed pretty brief. but I guess I had been waiting there for music to start for like an hour and a half. luckily the liqour store across the street knows some great ways to spend your time between set breaks. although most of my time was spend collecting photos and b-roll footage. I really like the photo I have here of these crazy "bottle nosed" dogs.
Finally was the amazing pop ensemble "THE FRENCH SEMESTER" which could be better described than the Description by my friend Lindsey.. "THEY ARE CUTE" some of the best LO-FI underground Pop music that you can get right up to your face like this. they were really good. the vocals were way too low the whole time. which sucks because they have cool lyrics and cool vocal harmonies. us (the audience) kept telling them.. but nobody ever fixed it. any way they were really loud in general and it came as a perfect finale to the show.
after the show I was starving and scraped up just enough money to go to del taco. but they fucked my order up by putting the devil "dairy" on my burritos even after confirming that I had said "no cheese" and when I got home and realized it was far to late for me to venture out and fix it. so I just went to bed starving. and to tell you the truth here I am in the morning still hungry and blogging. I really need to get some grub. anyway hope you all enjoy the video and I hope next time somebody will be more inclined to come along.
Video Coming Soon!!!
